Ranged against them are the Davids from the local community, largely tribal, equally determined to resist the pollution of their valuable water and demanding the closure of the Cola plant. // For over half a decade now this unprecedented struggle between one of the world s most powerful companies and ordinary villagers has been taking place in Plachimada in Palakkad district of Kerala. // Supporting the corporation are government agencies giving it a clean chit on the charges of water pollution made by their opponents. Not surprisingly, the workers of the plant are also engaged in a counter-agitation to protect their jobs. On the side of the tribals are farming households who are worried about the bottling plant depleting the already diminishing levels of groundwater available for agriculture and a few NGOs helping their agitation. // This book, based on thorough documentation and research of the Plachimada movement, takes a close look at the collective action strategy resorted to mostly by tribal labourers living around the bottling plant, who constitute the principal victims of water pollution. The book delves into how such a strong collective action gets originated and sustained for such a long period and examines the lessons to be learnt from the entire episode ER -
