It analyses the language, structure and style of literary works in English by writers from cultures that are different from the English culture and tradition, but relate to it in various ways, since they have been under British colonial rule in the past. It focuses on the transformations, variations and innovations that have taken place in the English language as it has taken root in countries around the world. Each chapter critically evaluates the works of the famous authors under consideration which extends to a discussion of links with the cultural context, implications of readership and explores further interpretative possibilities. Suggestions are made at the end of each analysis to whet the appetite of the reader for more analytical readings on the lines suggested. On the basis of these evaluations, the students and teachers can initiate discussions of writings in contextual significance, in a participatory manner, allowing for covergence and divergence between different readings. The aim of the book is to familiarise readers with tools of analysis which they can readily use in the study of literature.
